Julia Gordon Sworn in as FHA Commissioner
Julia Gordon has recently been confirmed by the United States Senate and sworn in as the Federal Housing Authority Commissioner, a position that has been open since March 2021. Vice President Harris cast the tie-breaking vote to confirm Gordon, who was nominated in June 2021.
The Assistant Secretary for Housing and the Federal Housing Commissioner is one of eight assistant secretaries to the Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and oversees the Federal Housing Administration including federal programs that deal with private mortgage market. Gordon will work closely with current HUD Secretary Marcia L. Fudge, who swore her into office on May 20, 2022.
Gordon has dedicated her career to housing, finance, and building strong communities. She brings 20 years of impressive legal and policy experience in housing, finance, and regulation to this position.
She completed both her undergraduate degree in government and law degree at Harvard.
After working at a law firm after graduation, she started her work in policy. She took a role at the Center for Law and Social Policy as senior staff attorney and then for the Center for Responsible Lending as senior policy counsel.
Later, as a Director and Senior Director at the Center for American Progress, Gordon continued to work on policy issues related to housing, asset building, financial inclusion, and more.
Gordon worked in partnerships to restore damaged properties so people could live in them and build strong communities as the Executive Vice President and President of the National Community Stabilization Trust.
Gordon is also familiar with the government work she will conduct and oversee. In 2011 and 2012, she worked for the Federal Housing Finance Agency in the Office of Housing and Regulatory Policy managing Single-Family Policy where she focused on the federally-backed mortgage lenders Freddie Mae and Freddie Mac.
She also worked on the Biden-Harris Transition Team as a member of the HUD/FHFA Agency Review Team.
With her impressive experience, Gordon is well-qualified for the role of FHA Commissioner and will work on behalf of the American people.
